Bold and Velvety
Dr Bill, our Director of Whisky Creation, was born with a taste for adventure. And with this single malt he sought to create a whisky as unpredictable as his travels.
Quinta Ruban is a whisky journey into the wild – a dark and delectable forest where the wind whistles with gusts of peppermint and dark swirls of chocolate can happen at any moment.
In our giraffe-high stills, it begins soft and fruity, then gets darker and deeper as we let it age for 14 years in bourbon casks and port casks from Portugal.
The finished whisky is a thicket of voluptuous flavour combinations. Walnut and black pepper. Mandarin orange and melted marshmallow. Dark chocolate bar and peppermint.
Like stepping into a chocolate-minty-orange unknown, the journey is as delicious as the destination.
Blend and Origin
From Scotland’s tallest stills, Glenmorangie’s Quinta Ruban is first aged in ex-bourbon casks, which impart smooth, fruity notes. Transferred into specially selected ruby port pipes from Portugal’s finest estates, Quinta Ruban gains new depth, velvety textures and bold chocolate flavours. This whisky is non-chill-filtered to highlight its complex aromas and rich mouthfeel.
Tasting Notes
A whisky journey into the wild, The Quinta Ruban is like a dark and delectable forest, where the wind whistles with gusts of peppermint and dark swirls of chocolate can happen at any moment.
Appearance: Dark gold with a ruby tint.
Nose: Dark mint chocolate and Seville oranges mingle with sandalwood and walnut, with a spicy finish of pepper and nutmeg.
Palate: Mint chocolate and walnuts envelop the palate, laying the foundations for rose, Turkish delight and sweet Seville oranges.
Finish: Long-lasting, silky aftertaste leaving dark chocolate mints and traces of orange.
This Quinta Ruban succeeds the 12 year old version, adding two additional years of finishing in port casks, while maintaining the same bargain price. The result is a symphony of understated opulence. Marzipan, fresh apple and pear, milk chocolate, red berries, candied ginger, and praline on the nose build slowly, leading into a fruity, spiced palate. Flavors of soft gingerbread, molasses cake, cherry pie, spiced plums, almond nougat, and dark chocolate intermingle with faint strains of pipe tobacco. It sings on the finish, with a parting crescendo of hazelnut, spice, cigar wrapper, and lengthy oak
While extra finished for two years in ruby Port casks, the impact on the spirit is minimal, imparting a rose-gold hue and a shadow of red berry flavor. Though it lacks the wow factor of the Nectar d Or, it s still quite good: Expect a warm, fruity scent with a hint of cedar and a smooth caramel-honey flavor with baking spices on the finish.
