Fasten your seatbelt: if you've never tasted luxurious black wine before, we envy your discovery. The grape is Malbec and its birthplace is Cahors, in France's windswept and wet, historic and hilly, Lot river valley. Chateau de Chambert, famous since the 19th C, sits high atop the limestone plateau (300m). At 65h, it is also the largest biodynamic vineyard in southwestern France. Since 2007 local entrepreneur Philippe Lejeune has put all his efforts into the densely-planted vines and gravity-fed cellar. Here are the three signature wines of the property, each increasingly concentrated and expensive, from La Tour to Chateau to the Grand Vin. All are hand-harvested, fermented on their wild yeasts, and aged in large oak ovals for two winters before bottling.
