Every year, nearly 6,000 Bordeaux estates pump out over 9,000 different wines. That means it’s challenging to know every label—but crucial to know the names behind them. For wine connoisseurs Domaine Henri Martin is one of those must-know names in Medoc.
Henri Martin is the pioneer who’s widely credited with reviving the fame of Saint-Julien. He founded Château Gloria, which he made one of the most prized non-classified wines of the Médoc by piecing the estate together, mostly from Grand Cru–classified parcels. One of Martin’s greatest achievements lay just outside Saint-Julien. Attracted by its proximity to Château Gloria, in 1980 he purchased one of the many estates in Bordeaux named Château Bel Air, renaming it Château Bel Air Gloria.
Fresh with a lovely beam of cassis and cherry coulis notes streaming through carried by fine chalky structure and backed by a whiff of smoldering tobacco. Merlot and cabernet franc. Drink now through 2025. 4 000 cases made.
Smoky with flavors of the wood aging, this wine is also rich and concentrated with firm tannins. Situated just inland from Saint-Julien and made by the owners of Château Gloria, the vineyard has produced a full wine with a serious structure and dark black fruitiness. Drink this ageworthy wine from 2024
